Dow closes above 10,000
Strong earnings from JPMorgan Chase and signs the economy continues to recover helped the Dow Jones industrial average close above the 10,000 mark today for the first time in a year.
The Dow closed at 10,015.41, after popping above 10,000 at 1:21 p.m. and then quickly backing off.
Driving the gains were strong earnings from computer chipmaker Intel, as well as blockbuster profits from banking giant JPMorgan Chase.
Stocks earlier this week looked poised to break the 10,000 mark before backing off because of concerns about the banking sector.
The Dow last traded above the 10,000 mark on Oct. 7, 2008, but at that time stocks were tumbling amid widespread panic over the financial crisis.
The last time the Dow closed above 10,000 was on Oct. 7. The Dow first closed above 10,000 on March 3, 1999.
