FOOTBALL: Boise State stays unbeaten

* 49ers rookie wide receiver Michael Crabtree will make his NFL debut in his home state at Houston on Oct. 25 following the team’s bye week.
* Colts kicker Adam Vinatieri is out four to eight weeks after having arthroscopic surgery on his right knee and the team signed veteran Matt Stover to replace him.
* Browns quarterback Brady Quinn said he has not asked coach Eric Mangini to trade him and that he only put his suburban home up for sale because he wants to downsize and shorten his commute.
* Colts QB Peyton Manning (sore left knee) gave himself a clean bill of health. Lions QB Matt Stafford (knee) and Bengals QB Carson Palmer (sprained left thumb) participated in practice.
* The Bay Area pit bull advocacy group BAD RAP said quarterback Michael Vick declined an invitation to visit eight of his former dogs this weekend when the Eagles are in town to play the Raiders.
SOCCER: Argentina qualifies for World Cup
Argentina, coached by Diego Maradona, survived a shaky qualifying World Cup campaign to earn South America’s final automatic berth for next year’s tournament, and Honduras, Switzerland and Slovakia also earned spots in the 32-nation field. Mario Bolatti scored in the 84th minute, and Argentina defeated Uruguay 1-0 last night in Montevideo. Twenty-three of 32 spots have been determined for the June tournament in South Africa.
* U.S. national team forward Charlie Davies remained in serious but stable condition at Washington (D.C.) Hospital Center Medstar following Tuesday’s automobile accident. He will be hospitalized for at least a week and is expected to take six to 12 months to recover.
HOOPS: Binghamton coach placed on leave
Binghamton basketball coach Kevin Broadus was placed on an indefinite paid leave of absence. The move comes after Friday’s announcement that Broadus admitted having contact with prospective recruits that violated NCAA regulations. Assistant coach Mark Macon will take over in the interim.
* The NBA fined Bobcats coach Larry Brown $60,000 for his actions during an exhibition game on Monday. Brown was hit with two technical fouls by replacement referee Kevin Scott, then lingered on the court after being ejected in the third quarter.
AUTOS: Massa won’t race in Brazil
Formula One driver Felipe Massa said he’s fit to race again but won’t compete in Sunday’s Brazilian Grand Prix out of fear of another accident. The Ferrari driver said he has fully recovered from his near-fatal crash in qualifying for the Hungarian GP in July.
* NASCAR founder Bill France Sr. has been selected as the first inductee of the sport’s Hall of Fame. Joining him the inaugural class of five are Bill France Jr., who took over for his father as head of NASCAR in 1972, Richard Petty, Dale Earnhart, and Junior Johnson.
