The developer of Manhattan’s upscale Time-Warner Center has received city Planning Commission approval to turn the Bronx’s historic Kingsbridge Armory into a retail complex.
The Related Companies says the $310 million project will bring jobs and businesses to the working-class neighborhood while reviving a vacant and neglected landmark.
Critics include Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. and a coalition of labor, religious and local groups. They say the developer should promise a “living” wage, allow workers to form a union and provide community space on the site.
The City Council votes on the project within 50 days.
The Economic Development Corporation says Kingsbridge is thought to be the world’s largest armory. It features Romanesque arches, vaulted ceilings, decorative brick and terra cotta, and large battlement towers.
