U.S. National Team star Landon Donovan became the first-ever six-time winner of the Honda Player of the Year Award. The Galaxy standout has six out of nine awards during this decade, and seemingly has this honor all locked up.
He rang up 424 points to beat out a pair of local New Jersey products. Everton keeper and former MetroStar Tim Howard was second with 267 points, while 19-year-old ex-Red Bull striker Jozy Altidore — now on loan at Hull in the Premiership — was third with 175.
Personally, I went with Howard, and I’m beginning to wonder just what the North Brunswick (N.J.) High School grad is going to have to do to get this trophy. I guess break into Donovan’s house and steal it, because he’s apparently never going to win it in a vote.
Not that Donovan is an undeserving winner, but it seems a little counterintuitive that nobody else has won since 2006 when Clint Dempsey did, and that Howard leading Everton to the FA Cup final and into Europe wasn’t enough.
But what do you think? Did you feel Donovan deserved it again? Would you have gone with T-Ho, or Jozy? Or somebody else altogether? Holla at us …
