The mob rat who helped put the “Dapper Don” behind bars for life may return to court as the star witness for the son of the late John Gotti.
In an ironic twist, Salvatore “Sammy Bull” Gravano is among several informants defense lawyers want to speak to about possibly testifying on behalf of John “Junior” Gotti.
The virtually unimaginable scenario was revealed yesterday by the judge at Gotti’s trial after he got a letter from the defense requesting access to the imprisoned killer.
“I’ll interview him, and I’ll see what we do,” attorney Charles Carnesi said afterward.
Gravano could help Gotti get off the hook in the 1990 gangland slaying of mobster Louis DiBono, who was gunned down in the World Trade Center garage after failing to appear when summoned by Gotti’s father, then boss of the Gambino crime family.
Prosecutors contend that Gotti arranged the hit, but Gravano “never once” implicated him during a series of sit-downs with the feds and in previous trial testimony about DiBono’s murder, Carnesi wrote in a recent letter to the judge.
Gravano, who admitted taking part in 19 mob murders as part of his cooperation deal, bailed out of the federal witness-protection program in 1995.
He’s been in prison in Arizona since 2002 for dealing ecstasy.
