Crime slides in 76th Precinct

Three seems to be a charm for the 76th Precinct.

Last week, the precinct — ranked third citywide as the safest in the city — recorded just three index crimes, the third time this year they have recorded that meager number.

“We never had a number that low before this year,” said Captain Kenneth Corey, the commanding officer of the precinct. “Now, it’s the third time.” In an otherwise quiet week, a burglary and two grand larcenies were reported. Prior to this year, the lowest weekly number was four crimes reported, Corey said.

For the year, all major categories of crime continue to slide in the 76th Precinct, recent police data shows. Robberies have fallen 11.16 percent, according to police statistics. For the week ending Oct. 11, grand larceny is down 12.2 percent, car thefts have dropped 17.6 percent, while burglaries declined 3.4 percent. Assaults have slid 9.7 percent rapes have been halved, with just one reported so far this year, compared to two last year, and robberies have fallen 14.7 percent. Murders are flat with three cases in both years.

In the past 28 days, crime has dropped 23.3 percent. Only assaults are up, at 14.3 percent, with eight incidents reported this year, compared to seven in 2008 for the same period. Burglaries have fallen a staggering 41.7 percent in this period with seven incidents reported compared to 12 in 2008; grand larcenies are down 32.1 percent and car thefts dropped 16.7 percent in the past month. In the past 28 days, robberies are flat, the data shows, and no murders or rapes have been reported.

Corey said a pop last month in assaults are not indicative of random street violence in the precinct, but rather altercations between people who know each other. A slight uptick in burglaries in September was reigned in after cops arrested a suspect on Congress Street thought to be responsible for a burglary pattern in Cobble Hill, Corey said. From Sept. 11 to Sept 26, seven burglaries were reported. “We’re fairly confident that he was responsible for committing them,” the top cop said.

The precinct covers Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill, Red Hook, Boerum Hill, and Gowanus.
