Guard charged with threatening Obama pleads not guilty

NEWARK, New Jersey — A lawyer has entered a not guilty plea for a private security guard at a New Jersey airport who is accused of threatening President Barack Obama.

John Brek said nothing when he appeared via video in a Newark courtroom Thursday. He was arraigned on a charge of making terroristic threats against the president.

Bail for the 55-year-old guard at Newark Liberty International Airport was doubled to $200,000.

Brek was arrested Tuesday night. That was hours after a Continental Airlines employee reported overhearing him make threatening comments at an airport coffee cart.

Obama arrived at the airport Wednesday to campaign for New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine.

A police search of Brek’s home in Linden yielded more than 40 firearms, all believed to be legal.
