PSAL Class A boys soccer playoff roundup: Tottenville returns to quarterfinals

Tottenville’s magical season continued Thursday afternoon in Huguenot.

The Staten Island A-champion Pirates shook off a slow start and advanced to the PSAL Class A quarterfinals with a hard-fought, 2-1 victory over No. 13 Erasmus Hall.

The fourth-seeded Tots trailed by a goal late in the first half, before Carlo Coladonato scored just before intermission.

“It was very big for us, that goal, it got us our confidence back,” coach Ron Nathanson said. “We were playing a little panicky when they scored that goal. We weren’t playing our game, rushing things.”

Nathanson said his club controlled the second half, possessing the ball in the Dutchmen’s third. Marco Mingozzi got the go-ahead tally 10 minutes into the second half on a header off a throw-in.

Tottenville (14-1-1) will meet No. 5 Lehman, which beat Susan Wagner, 4-2, at New Dorp HS at 9:30 a.m. in the quarterfinals on Tuesday. It’s the furthest the Pirates have gone, Nathanson said, since 1994.

The program has taken on quite a metamorphosis under Nathanson. The year before he took over, in 2006, the team won just twice and finished in the Staten Island A basement. Nathanson, formerly a JV baseball coach at the school, brought them to the playoffs the last two years and the division title this season.

“We’re all excited,” he said. “I like our chances. We’re playing good soccer. We’re ready to keep going.”

Martin Luther King Jr. 4, John Bowne 1: Mama Amar scored twice, Sebastian Ramirez had two assists and Souleymane Kone and Cristian Batista also added goals for No. 1 MLK (13-0-0), who faces eight-ranked Curtis next Tuesday at New Dorp HS at 11:30 a.m. No. 16 John Bowne completes its season at 7-5-2.

Columbus 6, Bryant 0: Alhoussain Bah scored twice and Frank Osei, Michael Asante, Shamar Hyatt and Armando Dadaj also had a goal apiece for third-seeded Columbus. The Explorers (12-1-1), who led 5-0 at the half, meet No. 6 Beacon next Tuesday at Canarsie HS at 9:30 a.m. in a rematch of last year’s semifinals, won by the Blue Demons. Bryant is 7-5-2.

Curtis 3, James Madison 2: Brayan Evo, Joseph Romero and Edward Whifield each found the back of the net and Camilo Vallejo and Peter Hanna had helpers for No. 8 Curtis. The Warriors (13-1-2) meet top-ranked MLK next Tuesday at New Dorp HS at 11:30 a.m. Ninth-ranked James Madison, the Brooklyn A West champs, are 9-2-3.
