My web-exclusive review of the Encores! staging of “Girl Crazy” is up. The Gershwins’ score sounds amazing of course, but not always thanks to the spotty cast. These songs could survive almost anything, but you wish they were delivered with a bit more ooomph than they are at City Center. Still, it’s a fine night out if you like classic musicals — and who doesn’t?
If you can’t get a ticket — or even if you already have one — enjoy this great number from the loose (to say the least) 1943 film adaptation, which starred Mickey Rooney, Judy Garland, June Allyson and Nancy Walker. Choreography by Busby Berkeley, Tommy Dorsey piloting the orchestra: This is American artistry at its most exalted.
