The Mets’ award drought ended in bizarre fashion yesterday with catcher Omir Santos’ inexplicable selection to the prestigious Topps Rookie All-Star Team over the Orioles’ Matt Wieters.
Santos, 28, was tabbed despite Wieters having better numbers virtually across the board. Wieters hit .288 with nine homers and 43 RBIs in 96 games, while Santos hit .260 with seven homers and 40 RBIs in the same number of games.
The Mets were one of just two teams (along with Baltimore) that didn’t receive a single vote for any of the major awards.
