The Locust Point Civic Association has a lot to be proud of. A new state-of-the-art playground is planned for its clubhouse grounds and more residents want to join its board.
According to LPCA president Jerry Landi, the board will soon elect three new members. Landi has seen renewed interest in the association from around the neighborhood. All LPCA board members are volunteers.
“I am glad to see that people are looking to get involved,” Landi said. “Three people have approached me to say that they are interested in being board members, which is unusual and something we have not seen in a long time. I guess they see what we want to accomplish. They want to help.”
The planned playground for Locust Point children is the association’s most important project. It will sit behind the association’s clubhouse at 3300 Tierney Place. Construction will begin when funds already allocated by Senator Jeff Klein and Councilman Jimmy Vacca are processed. Not only does the LPCA plan to renovate its old playground, it also plans to rehab a basketball court, build a new picnic area and lay a new deck around a ground-level pool.
“The Locust Point Civic Association came to me several years ago with a plan to remake their playground area and create a state-of-the-art recreation space for their community,” Vacca said. “I was happy to secure $200,000 through the City Council to make their dreams a reality, and am looking forward to seeing work begin in the near future.”
Senator Jeff Klein has contributed $10,000 to rehab the LPCA clubhouse and helped renegotiate the clubhouse’s lease with the city.
“For more than 50 years, the Locust Point Civic Association has been like a second home to many families – uniting the community through holiday celebrations, regular social hours, shows for local artists,” Klein said. “This year I was able to secure a $10,000 grant to help fund new programs and community building activities. Last year, I helped negotiate the extension of the lease for the clubhouse. I am thrilled to see now, as a new year begins, that the LPCA is flourishing more than ever.”
