Boys & Girls forward Leroy Fludd won his appeal for eligiblity, but his academic woes mean he won’t be able to help the Kangaroos on the court until the school’s next marking period, a Department of Education spokesperson told The Post.
A 6-foot-5 transfer from Grady, Fludd was ruled ineligible by the PSAL on Dec. 2 because of the league’s transfer-eligibility rules, which prohibits players to transfer from one public school to another without sitting out an entire season. Boys & Girls promptly appealed the decision in a hearing Dec. 19, but didn’t hear about the ruling, decided by a hearing officer representing Chancellor Joel Klein, until today.
“Leroy Fludd was granted eligibility but will not be eligible because he is not academically eligible at this time,” DOE spokesperson Margie Feinberg said. “He should be eligible at the next marking period.”
The High was hopeful the PSAL would clear Fludd based on a conversation over the summer with Grady principal Carlston Grady. Coach Ruth Lovelace said Grady told Fludd and his family the Coney Island school wouldn’t have a basketball program. It was a possibility at the time because of coaching instability. Since, coach Mark Seltzberg has stepped down, the third time in the last three years, and was replaced by JV coach Karl Sanders.
Fludd made an impact for Grady last year as a freshman, averaging 14 points and 12 rebounds per game. He would immediately add an inside presence to Boys & Girls, which is tied atop Brooklyn AA at 7-2 with borough rivals Lincoln and Thomas Jefferson.
