The recession wasn’t kind to the MTA.
The agency lost a whopping $100 million in fares between January and October 2009 as compared to the same time frame in 2008 because of the staggering number of laid off riders, a new report from the State Comptroller said.
There were 75 million bus, rail, and bridge passengers in 2009 as opposed to 2008, as the city lost 110,000 jobs.
“People don’t commute when they’re unemployed,” said Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli.
Subway ridership saw the sharpest decline.
