NYC’s guardian angel: A homeless hero dies

THE ISSUE: The murder of Hugo Tale-Yax, who saved a woman from attack and was left to die.

***

Thank you, Andrea Peyser, for your sensitive and compassionate commentary on the senseless murder and subsequent dispassionate attitude of some 25 individuals (“City’s Heart of Stone,” April 29).

When did we stop caring about and loving our fellow humans, regardless of where they are from or what they look like?

My heart breaks for a country that has become self-centered and uncaring.

Hugo Alfredo Tale-Yax, a homeless, illegal immigrant, gave his life so that a complete stranger would live.

Unlike the professional athletes who are enshrined in their halls of fame and are heroes to millions, Tale-Yax’s name will soon be forgotten.

His act of heroism was not witnessed by thousands of adoring fans and was accomplished instinctively, with no thought of remuneration or fame.

If there is any justice, Tale-Yax’s reward will come after his life on Earth. For this, we should all say a prayer.

I often don’t agree with Peyser’s rants, which usually leave me eye-rolling. But her column about Tale-Yax is spot-on.

I’m stunned that the woman he saved has not yet come forward. “Heartless” and “tragic” are the first two words that come to mind.

I hope Peyser is able to effect a change through her words. Thanks for working to make a difference.
