ESPN/ABC analyst Mark Jackson talked with The Post’s Justin Terranova about his coaching search, the conference finals and why he would be hesitant to sign with the Knicks if he was a free agent.
Q: Is New York enough of a selling point to lure LeBron James and the other free agents to the Knicks?
A: It’s definitely an attraction because it’s New York City. I was born and raised in New York and played there my first five years, so I was absolutely devastated when I was traded. I knew nothing else. I thought that New York was it. I think ultimately you realize there are a lot of great situations and a lot of great cities. At the end of the day, it boils down to what is best for each individual. It wouldn’t be an attraction if I was a free agent and I didn’t think I was going to win. Losing, no matter where the place is, is not attractive. Bottom line is you want to win.
Q: How are your coaching interviews going?
A: They’ve gone well and we’ll see how it plays out. There are some great opportunities available. I am a God-fearing man and I know it will work out no matter what.
Q: Have you talked to the Nets about their opening?
A: No, but they are a team that’s on the rise. Their future is extremely bright. They have young, outstanding talent and room for a max guy. You also have a lottery pick, a new owner and great people running the front office. They will be very good right away and it’s an attractive situation.
Q: Where were these Celtics the whole regular season?
A: They’ve gotten healthy. That’s when you saw they started to play Celtic basketball. Their rotations have been stronger on defense and they’re paying attention to details. And Kevin Garnett is dominating the post. He’s clearly had the matchups and he is taking advantage of it. And (Rajon) Rondo is playing as good as any point guard in the league right now.
Q: Can the Suns beat the Lakers?
A: The Suns are a much- improved defensive team, they take pride in defense now. I just think the Lakers are just the superior team. They cause problems across the board. The length of the Lakers and Kobe (Bryant) playing the way he is playing. I don’t think it’s possible for the Suns to win this series.
