Bishop Ford wins first CHSAA B/Q ‘B’ softball title

Bishop Ford had been scoring early and often all season and this time its relentless offensive attack gave the taste of being a champion.

The Falcons scored in all but one frame during a 18-6 six-inning run-rule win over Brooklyn rival St. Saviour for the first-ever CHSAA Brooklyn/Queens Class B softball title Thursday at the Parade Grounds. Amanda Flores had three hits including a two-run double to spark a five-run first inning for the regular-season champions. Ford (10-1) won both previous meetings against the Pandas (8-3).

“She got us started today right away,” Ford coach Liz Wade said. “You can say she surprised us.”

Liza Nunez collected three hits, three RBIs and four runs scored. Karina Santana had two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored. Ace Ashley Peterson allowed one earned run while scattering seven hits and striking out seven for Ford, which led 10-2 after the second innings. The Falcons were a perennial playoff team at the ‘A’ level before dropping to the newly formed division.

“It’s great for the kids,” Wade said. … “It’s nice to be the first team to win the B division.”
