Former Jets wideout Santana Moss yesterday was the first in what could be numerous dominoes to fall in the budding NFL scandal tied to disgraced doctor Anthony Galea.
Moss, now with the Redskins and brother of Giants receiver Sinorice Moss, was fingered by multiple media outlets yesterday as receiving human growth hormone from Galea last year in violation of NFL rules.
Galea, a Canadian who is not licensed to practice in the U.S., was indicted earlier this week in Buffalo on multiple charges related to distributing HGH and other performance-enhancing drugs to three unnamed current and former NFL players last year.
The scandal could continue to erupt because ESPN reported that documents obtained from a Canadian court show 23 unidentified athletes — most likely from the NFL, Major League Baseball and the PGA Tour — received HGH and other PEDs from Galea last year alone.
Santana Moss, who battled knee injuries last season, is just the first to have his name made public, and neither he nor agent Drew Rosenhaus did much to deny the accusation yesterday.
Moss told reporters at the Redskins’ camp that he was only going to talk about football, while Rosenhaus did not return messages seeking comment.
Moss could be facing an NFL drug suspension. The league said yesterday that it is investigating the reports about Moss and is eager to know all three players mentioned in Galea’s U.S. indictment.
“Let’s just wait and see before we throw [Moss] underneath the bus,” Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said. “Just because he’s been associated with a doctor doesn’t mean this person’s guilty.”
