Daisuke Matsuzaka took a no-hitter into the eighth inning, losing his bid on Juan Castro’s bloop single with two outs, and the Red Sox beat the Phillies 5-0 last night in Philadelphia.
The Red Sox made several outstanding defensive plays on hard-hit balls, but it was Castro’s soft single over shortstop that finally fell. The right-hander retired Shane Victorino to end the eighth, and Daniel Bard worked a perfect ninth to finish the one-hitter.

In Houston, local product Jeff Niemann struck out five in seven efficient innings, Dioner Navarro had a two-run double and the Rays beat the Astros.
