West Point cadet found guilty of rape charge

WEST POINT, N.Y. — A U.S. Military Academy cadet has been found guilty of rape in military court.

A judge sentenced Cadet Kyle Newman to 3 1/2 years confinement, dismissal from the Army, and forfeiture of all pay and allowances at the end Thursday of a three-day court martial.

Newman had faced two charges of rape for two incidents last year. He was acquitted of one rape charge.

Newman, who would have graduated with the Class of 2010 last Saturday, was also found guilty of indecent conduct. He had pleaded guilty to three violations of failing to obey an order.

Academy officials said they could not by law provide an age or hometown for Newman.

The last rape case at West Point was in 2008, when a cadet was found not guilty of rape.
