U.S. National Team striker Jozy Altidore reportedly sprained his right ankle at practice. It was termed mild, but the New Jersey-born forward was sent to a South African hospital to have an X-ray taken, which came back negative.
The story was first reported by ESPN. Altidotre will have a fitness test tomorrow to see if he can play in Saturday’s tuneup against Australia. U.S. Soccer is listing him as day-to-day.
If Altidore’s ankle actually forces him from the World Cup, the United States could call in a replacement up until 24 hours before its opener June 12 vs. England. But let’s be honest here, if Altidore can’t play, there are no forwards in the pool who can truly replace him.
Houston’s Brian Ching, who scored against the Red Bulls last night, would be a possibility.
