The PSAL and CHSAA will meet in an all-star game at MCU Park in Coney Island for the first time ever on June 18, The Post has learned.
Fifty of the best high-school seniors, as selected by each league’s respective coaches, will take part in a home run derby and game aptly named The Mayor’s Cup baseball championship, presented by the Brooklyn Cyclones and NYC & Company, the city’s official marketing, tourism and partnership organization.
“The Mayor’s Cup game will give our student-athletes the opportunity to showcase their talent at MCU Park, one of minor league baseball’s premier ballparks,” Brooklyn Cyclones general manager Steve Cohen said. “We hope this is the first of many all-star games in Brooklyn”.
The home run derby will begin around 5 p.m. and the teams will be introduced at 6:35 p.m., followed by a ceremonial first pitch and the national anthem, before the 7 p.m. game time.
Two NYC Mayor’s Cups will be awarded, one to the winning team and one for the individual home run derby champion during which five players from each league will compete to see who can hit the most home runs. Every one of the 50 players will receive an NYC Mayor’s Cup medal.
“I love the idea, we’re talking about a true all-star game,” Norman Thomas coach Nerva Jean Pierre said. “Best kids from the PSAL, best kids from the Catholic league. It will be a great thing.”
Said Lehman star Tyler Gurman: “Even if you lose in the first round [of the playoffs] or your team wasn’t that good, it gives you a chance to shine. It’s great exposure.”
CHSAA chairmen and Mount St. Michael coach Wally Stampfel was pleased to get involved when he was contacted. In recent years, the Catholic league’s all-star game grew stale.
“It was a no-brainer,” Stampfel said. “Hopefully the kids will have enthusiasm for the game and it will work. The fact we’re playing the PSAL now will add some spice to it.”
