Rex Ryan didn’t throw a strike, but wasn’t half bad, either.
The Jets coach – donning Mets jersey No. 30 in honor of Nolan Ryan – threw the ceremonial first pitch last night at Citi Field and managed to reach home plate from the rubber. Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum wore No. 15 in honor of catcher Jerry Grote and caught Ryan’s heave just off the corner.
Ryan said it was a relief to have Darrelle Revis at minicamp yesterday. The All-Pro cornerback skipped a practice last week because he does not have a new contract in place.
“[Revis] made like three interceptions today – one of them is not possible to make, so it’s always good to see him out there,” Ryan said.
Ryan said he’s not worried about Revis’ contract becoming an issue with the team.
“That is somebody else’s job,” Ryan said. “I just hope it’s going to work out for both sides where both sides are happy. I think he’s the best corner in football and it’s a lot easier to win with him.”
Ryan said he asked his players how many thought he would throw a strike last night and two hands went up.
“I’ve never pitched before a day in my life,” Ryan said.
