Police say single prop planes will be practicing aerobatic maneuvers over New York City in preparation for the Red Bull Air Race later this week.
About 30 planes will randomly depart Linden Airfield in New Jersey on Tuesday, and head south of Staten Island and the Verrazano Bridge. They will fly at low altitudes between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m.
For the race on Wednesday and Thursday, the planes will fly up the Hudson River and hold south of the Statue of Liberty between 500 and 1,000 feet, between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.
Police note that the planes will be emitting smoke, which they say is normal for aerobatic aircraft.
