Mickelson can claim No. 1 at U.S. Open

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. — The footsteps Tiger Woods might be hearing this week at the U.S. Open are not the high heels of his long list of mistresses or the paparazzi chasing him but the metal spikes of Phil Mickelson.

Woods is in jeopardy of losing the No. 1 ranking he has held for the past five years and Mickelson has a legitimate chance to overtake him and assume the top spot for the first time in his career.

Mickelson can reach No. 1 by winning this week at Pebble Beach, but there are other possible scenarios that can get him there.

He can get to No. 1 by finishing runner-up as long as Woods finishes out of the top four. He could finish third and leapfrog to No. 1 if Woods were to finish out of the top 18. If Woods misses the cut, Mickelson would need no worse than a two-way tie for third.

Mickelson, who turns 40 on Sunday, has finished runner-up at the U.S. Open five times in his past 11 starts. He captured his third Masters title in April.

Regular practice partner Arjun Atwal said he thinks believes Woods is “very close” to his best.

“His practices have been really good the last couple of weeks,” Atwal told Reuters after he, Woods and Dustin Johnson finished 18 holes at Pebble Beach.
