Food poisoning hits 90 World Cup volunteers

Ninety World Cup volunteers were taken to hospital Friday with food poisoning after eating breakfast at a stadium in the northeastern city of Nelspruit, AFP reported citing a statement by event organizers.

“Ninety volunteers had food poisoning after having breakfast,” said Rich Mkhondo, spokesman for the local organizing committee.

“Everybody is fine,” he said. “They are receiving medication and they all left the hospital.”

The Mbombela Stadium, with a capacity of about 40,000 fans, is one of the facilities which was built to allow South Africa to host the tournament.

About 15,000 people from South Africa and abroad are volunteering at the World Cup, including 985 in Nelspruit, to help fans navigate stadiums, offer directions, and help with administrative tasks.

Chile defeated Honduras in Nelspruit Wednesday and the next game there will be Italy vs. New Zealand on June 20.
