WASHINGTON — BP, which boasts in new TV ads about how good a job it is doing in paying for Gulf oil damages, is fighting a war of numbers with a congressional panel.
The House Judiciary Committee said only 12 percent of claims — $71 million out of an estimated $600 million — had been paid as of Tuesday.
But BP spokesman Scott Dean said yesterday the dollar value of payouts was $95 million and that it had cut 30,000 checks, accounting for about half of the 60,000 claims made so far.
