I wrote about Clubbed Thumb’s Summerworks 2010 a few days ago, and the fest is concluding with a wonderful show titled “The Small.” It’s playing only until Saturday and yesterday’s performance was packed to the rafters so get moving — the word is getting around.
The deal with Summerworks is that the plays are not open for reviews, so I’ll just say that “The Small” is mystifying, funny and smart in equal measures. I’m not sure what it’s about and yet it casts an odd spell and is well worth seeing — this not a review but a recommendation! The show features one of the best dream sequences I’ve ever seen on stage, which alone is well worth the $18 ticket price.
The creative team is ace: Anne Washburn’s plays include “The Ladies,” “Apparition” and “The Internationalist,” and director Les Waters’ most recent local credit is “In the Next Room or the vibrator play” on Broadway. The cast includes the lovely Maria Dizzia, a Tony nominee for “In the Next Room” (she was the patient getting treated by Michael Cerveris), and Susan Pourfar, who was in “When the Rain Stops Falling” at Lincoln Center.
A word of warning: The Ohio Theater’s air conditioning is … well, there isn’t any, really, so be prepared to sweat it out.
