Stabbed on the boardwalk
An 18-year-old was stabbed repeatedly and struck in the head with a beach chair during a bloody June 19 brawl on the Coney Island Boardwalk.
Officials said the victim got into an argument with the three thugs near Stillwell Avenue at 7:50 pm when one of them made an unflattering comment about his girlfriend.
The trio then attacked, leaving their victim with extensive injuries that required medical attention.
The three suspects were arrested and charged with assault following a short investigation.
Maple menace
Cops in Manhattan Beach have a new enemy — arbor-thieves!
An Amherst Street resident between Shore Boulevard and Hampton Avenue told police on June 18 that someone had plucked a maple tree sapling right out of his front yard.
The discovery — and the hole — were found at 6 am, said police.
Restaurant raid
A brazen gunman held up a Coney Island Chinese/taco restaurant on June 17, running off with an undetermined amount of receipts.
Workers at the eatery, which is on Mermaid Avenue between West 28th and West 29th streets, said that the thief came in at 2:45 pm and pulled a gun, demanding they empty the register.
No injuries were reported.
Beaten on the beach
A woman needed medical attention after she was attacked and robbed in Brighton Beach.
Police said that the victim was enjoying the sand and the surf on the beach at the foot of Coney Island Avenue at 3:30 pm on June 4 when three thugs attacked, punching her in the face repeatedly.
The suspects made off with her purse and jewelry, leaving her with a broken sinus bone. She had to undergo surgery at a local hospital to correct the fracture, she told police.
Cops caught up with one of the suspects, a 17-year-old, this week, charging him with robbery in the first degree and gang assault. His associates were still at large by late Tuesday.
Unsaintly behavior
A thief broke into the United Methodist Church of Sheepshead Bay on June 19, not realizing that a worker was inside.
The custodian told police he was mopping the floors in the Ocean Avenue house of worship, which is between Voorhies Avenue and Shore Parkway, just before midnight when he heard a crashing sound.
When he looked up, he saw a man in his 20s trying to get into the kitchen window.
The thief gave up his attempt as soon as he realized he was being watched and ran off, said police, who were still looking for the burglar as this paper went to press.
Late night repairs
Cops arrested two would-be thieves caught hammering — literally — their way into an apartment on Jerome Avenue.
A tenant of the building, which is between Ocean Avenue and East 21st Street, told police that she woke up to some loud noises coming up from the apartment above her’s.
When she went to investigate, she found two strange men armed with hammers and screwdrivers inside the apartment. The lock to the door was damaged, she noted before calling police.
Responding officers charged the two men with burglary.
Checked into a cell
A drug user was arrested on June 19 after he was caught with the proceeds from another addiction — breaking into cars.
Police allege that the 29-year-old entered a car parked on East 15th Street in Sheepshead Bay on June 17, swiping several checks and some financial papers the car’s owner left in the trunk.
Two days later he was arrested at the corner of Bridgewater Court and Brighton 15th Street, when cops found one of the stolen checks in his pocket during a drug sweep.
Cops reportedly took him into custody on a drug charge. But when they looked through his pockets, they found one of the checks stolen from the car, according to prosecutors.
Tool taker
Two thieves looted a garage behind a Bensonhurst home on June 19, taking an assortment of tools.
Police said that the suspects crept behind the Bay Ridge Avenue home, which is between 14th and 15th avenues, and forced open the garage and took several boxes of tools.
One of the thieves, a 55-year-old, was arrested a short time later, charged with burglary.
Robbed of bag
A 63-year-old woman was robbed of her handbag after she walked through Sheepshead Bay on June 9.
The victim said she was nearing the corner of East 28th Street and Avenue Z at 8:30 pm when an unidentified male grabbed her purse, which contained $280, her passport and $85 in money orders, while he ran past her.
The thief was last seen running down Nostrand Avenue, police said.
Followed and robbed
A thief jumped a 17-year-old outside Sheepshead Bay High School on June 8.
The victim said he was on Batchelder Street between Avenues X and Y just after 9 am when the thief tried to take his iPod out of his hand.
The victim managed to keep his iPod, but not before being punched in the face, officials said.
Wipe out graffiti
As the ongoing war against graffiti vandalism continues, cops are now offering a $500 reward to anyone with information that can lead them to graffiti vandals.
The hefty reward is part of the city’s new push to rid New York of graffiti, which is one of the leading quality of life complaints brought to police.
Officials said that cleaning up graffiti is essential to the plan, to show that the community is no longer going to tolerate marred and tagged-up walls and street corners.
According to police, there is a perception that if a community will tolerate graffiti, they will tolerate other criminal activities, such as drug dealing and prostitution.
Anyone with information about graffiti vandalism in their neighborhood is urged to contact either 311 or 911.
