The latest goal the United States has ever scored in the World Cup turned out to be the biggest and most important. Landon Donovan’s 91st-minute strike gave the United States a 1-0 win over Algeria and sent them through to the Round of 16.

A soccer fan reminded me just the other day of my favorite Maya Angelou quote: “Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.” Donovan’s strike was certainly one of those rare moments.
