Newport news
The high price of cigarettes might have motivated a pack of nicotine addicts to steal 30 cartons of Newports from a delivery van on Hoyt Street on June 28.
Days before the latest city tax hike on smokes went into effect, a pack of perps swiped the precious tobacco from a van as its driver made a delivery on the block between Warren and Wyckoff streets at around 4 pm.
In their haste to escape with the increasingly valuable goods, the thugs even swiped the driver with their getaway car, a green Honda civic.
Purse snatching
A middle-aged, knife-wielding thief grabbed a woman’s purse near the corner of Nevins and Dean streets early on June 30.
The robber approached the woman at around 12:30 am and demanded the purple leather satchel.
She handed it over, and he fled with the bag, which contained her wallet and phone.
Stealing by scent
A thief pulled a knife on a hygiene-obsessed man who was dousing himself with cologne on Fulton Street on June 29.
The victim told police that he was attending to his toilette in a phone booth near Elm Place at around 7:45 am when the perp stuck his blade against the man’s neck and took his eye glasses and wallet out of his pocket.
Chevy theft
A thief stole a 1984 Chevy Caprice from Bergen Street between Nevins and Bond streets on June 30.
Police provided no other details.
What a tool
A handy burglar stole a saw, screw gun and other tools from the trunk of a Chevrolet van on Joralemon Street on June 28.
The victim told cops that he had parked the truck between Clinton and Court streets at around 8 am, but returned to find that the thief had entered through the van’s unlocked back door and helped himself to the tools.
