“Twilight” fans apparently have stopped reading reviews (I got a bunch of hate mail after slamming the first movie, very little after slamming the second even harder) but if they are, they must be pleased to see the “notices” (as my old colleague Clive Barnes called them) are a bit better this time around. After the lugubrious, interminable and fun-deprived second episode scored only 27 percent approval on Rotten Tomatoes, no. 3, “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” is at a healthier 44 percent so far. I don’t buy the quality-relativism theory (i.e., it’s good if you’re a teen girl); I think a movie simply works or it doesn’t, regardless of your age or sex, and the first two episodes were, to me, clear failures, especially the second. I am not going to pretend to be someone I am not and imagine how the film would look to me then. But I do think the third episode does some things better than the first two. My review of “Eclipse” will be in tomorrow’s Post.
