There will be a familiar face in the visiting bullpen when the Mariners hit Yankee Stadium tonight — former Yankees closer and 1996 World Series MVP John Wetteland.
Now Seattle’s bullpen coach, Wetteland has done his best to stay out of the spotlight since retiring after the 2000 season, but last year a bizarre incident got him in the news and on The Post’s back page.
On Nov. 12, Wetteland was rushed to a Dallas hospital after a call to police. One police report read that the person placing the call, Wetteland’s wife, said he appeared to be suicidal. But the Mariners released a statement saying he had an elevated heart rate and high blood pressure due to a mix-up in medications. Wetteland spent just one night at the hospital and, six months later, the event remains a mystery.
