When the Yankees signed Gary Sanchez for $3 million last summer, the third largest bonus for a prospect ever out of the Dominican Republic, they expected big things.
But I think it’s fair to say that even they wouldn’t have expected to see the immediate results they’ve gotten from the 17-year-old catcher in his first week of pro ball. Through his first six games with the organization’s Gulf Coast League affiliate, Sanchez is hitting .417 (10-for-24) with three doubles, two home runs, nine RBI and eight runs scored. One of those home runs was a grand slam in his debut last Monday.
After a day off yesterday, Sanchez arguably had his best day of the young season today, going 3-for-4 with a double, RBI and three runs scored.
