Rex Ryan referred to his kicker, Nick Folk, as “awesome” during the week. Ryan’s opinion might soon change on that.
Folk shanked a 37-yard field-goal attempt with 3:49 left in the third quarter that would have tied yesterday’s game against the Packers at 3-3.
It was his only attempt of the day in front of 78,484 fans at New Meadowlands Stadium, and his miss sent the Jets to their first shutout defeat, 9-0, since 2006.
“I swept it up to the right,” Folk said.
Was there anything wrong with the snap or the hold?
“Everything was fine,” Folk said. “My fault.”
The timing was unfortunate for Folk, who is 13-for-16 on field goals this season. If he had missed a kick in a blowout, it would have been less noticeable. And he wasn’t helped by the fact that his Packers counterpart, Mason Crosby, was 3-for-4, including kicks of 41 and 40 yards, to account for all of the game’s scoring.
Folk said his mechanics were sound and the bye week did not throw him off at all.
“I was fine all week,” Folk said. “I’ve been kicking well. It’s hard to make them all, but I damn sure should’ve made it.”
Folk, in his fourth NFL season, entered yesterday tied with Josh Scobee of the Jaguars for sixth in field goals made this season. He also is a perfect 16-for-16 on extra points, though none of those came yesterday, obviously.
