Cynthia Tucker makes it sound like the pill hasn’t been available to millions of women for decades now. Instead, she tries to argue that if the panel deciding the standards for women’s preventive care under the new health reform law decide to include free birth control pills that it will revolutionize behavior and result in fewer out-of-wedlock births.
Can we just stop with the supposedly “scientific” or “health” arguments. The fact is that the women’s health amendment was added to Obamacare by Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.) who admits the intent was to include family planning. Mikulski isn’t a doctor worried about how many pregnancies women may have in their lifetime and she’s not an economist who is arguing that the cost of a $5 co-pay for a month’s worth of birth control pills is just too high. Mikulski is a Liberal who believes the government should help women avoid getting pregnant. What is so terrible about admitting the truth? Conservatives at least are open about their moral objections to the government supporting certain behaviors, why can’t the left just admit that they do want the government in that position. Then at least we can have an honest debate.
