French president Nicolas Sarkozy was among the intended recipients of four parcel bombs found Monday in Athens, police said, after one exploded and injured a woman.
Four people were arrested after the explosion, thought to be the work of an elusive far-left extremist group.
The suspects, two men and two women, were arrested shortly after the bomb exploded inside the headquarters of courier company Swiftmail, slightly injuring a female employee who is in no immediate danger, a police source said.
One of the men was wearing a bulletproof vest and carried a handgun. A parcel similar to the one that exploded was found with the group.
The police said one of the people detained is a suspected member of Conspiracy of Fire Nuclei, a far-left group that specializes in arson attacks against the offices and homes of politicians.
It also planted a small explosive device in a garbage can outside the Greek parliament in January, after police claimed to have arrested several of the group’s members in raids around the capital.
The parcel that exploded Monday was addressed to the Mexican embassy in Athens. At another courier service, police found a second suspect parcel addressed to the Dutch embassy.
