Ricky Martin told Oprah Winfrey he cried “like a little baby” in the wake of his March announcement that he was gay, People magazine reported Monday.
The 38-year old pop star recounted on the “The Oprah Winfrey Show” how he felt after he wrote on his website that he was proud to be “a fortunate homosexual man.”
“When I realized, okay, I just pressed send, whoo … I was alone,” Martin told Winfrey in an interview to air Tuesday.
“I was in my studio alone for a minute. My assistant walked in and I just started crying like a little baby. I started crying.”
Speculation had raged for years about the Latino singer’s sexuality and Martin told the talk-show host he finally decided to come out as a gay man to set an example about being honest for his young children, two-year-old twin sons Valentino and Matteo — who were born via a surrogate.
“I couldn’t take it anymore,” he said.
“It was too painful. But I guess the most important thing is my children … When I was holding them in my arms I was like, ‘What, am I gonna teach them how to lie?’ Whoa, that is my blessing right there. Then, when I was holding my children I said, ‘Okay, it’s time to tell the world.'”
Martin is promoting his memoirs — entitled “Me” — which will be released Tuesday.
