Jose Reyes’ future with the Mets isn’t guaranteed, but the team holds all the cards.
In Sandy Alderson’s first real player move as general manager, the Mets announced yesterday that they have exercised their $11 million option on Reyes for 2011, keeping the shortstop from becoming a free agent. The team had until today to reach a decision.
By picking up his option, the Mets could still trade Reyes if they choose. There is also the possibility the Mets will look to sign Reyes to a long-term deal.
“A long-term deal is not out of the question,” Alderson said. “It is something we can certainly discuss at a future date.”
Reyes battled oblique injuries last season after missing most of spring training with elevated thyroid levels. In 133 games, he batted .282 with 11 homers and 54 RBIs, with 30 stolen bases.
“[Reyes] is one of the most dynamic players in the game and there never was any doubt about picking up his option,” Alderson said.
Reyes issued a statement saying he’s happy he’ll have a chance to remain in the organization in which he grew up.
“I want to do everything I can to help turn this around here,” he said. “The last four years have been disappointing for everyone. We have to make it better and we will.”
