‘Call’ shoots to No. 1

Take that, Harry Potter!

Activision Blizzard’s “Call of Duty: Black Ops” generated a whopping $360 million in first-day sales, the highest take ever for a video game, the company said yesterday.

That’s roughly 6 million unit sales of the $59.99 game.

The company, whose shares edged up nearly 8 cents a share to close at $11.89 yesterday, held the previous one-day sales record with $310 million in sales of last year’s “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.”

Dollar for dollar, it also appears to surpass other historic media launches.

“Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” holds the record for the largest worldwide opening day for films. It grossed $104 million its first day in theaters in July 2009.

Still, Activision’s big hit isn’t a signal that the struggling video-game industry is poised for a turnaround, says Gartner analyst Van Baker. That’s because of the increasing availability of “distractions” on the Internet, he says.

“There’s lots of alternative entertainment to distract consumers — and most of it’s for free,” he said.
