Public School 52 students are officially Good Samaritans for putting their feet where their mouths are and raising big moolah for the American Diabetes Association during the school’s third annual “Step Out” benefit walk in Sheepshead Bay.
The big-hearted bunch cheerily traipsed four times around the school on E. 29th Street, between Avenue Z and Voorhies Avenue — that’s equivalent to a mile — to raise $1,700 for research and programs, boosting their street cred by carrying placards and chanting, “Stamp out diabetes.”
Even the kindergartners were rarin’ to do their bit for the stricken, said parent coordinator Barbara Warner.
“They were really excited and striving to make that mile,” she enthused.
Strapped by budget cuts, the American Diabetes Association didn’t distribute its usual “thank you” gifts to students this year, but that didn’t deter the pint-sized pavement-pounders — or Principal Ilene Altschul — from getting out and doing their best.
“They did it because it was a nice thing to do,” said Warner.
