Game on.
Eight days after tapping publishing powerhouse Cathie Black to take over the city’s public schools system, Mayor Bloomberg laid down his case today for state officials to grant her a waiver.
The long-anticipated request — which is needed because Black lacks the necessary education credentials to serve as chancellor — focuses on Black’s acumen as a business leader with experience handling complex budgetary and legal challenges.
The six-page letter now sets in motion a process in Albany whereby State Education Commissioner David Steiner will appoint a committee to review the evidence supporting a waiver — including Bloomberg’s letter, Black’s resume and her official college transcripts.
Steiner will then follow the advice of the panel in making a decision to grant or deny the waiver.
