Finally, a music video for a “you done me wrong” song that doesn’t involve the mistreated girl tramping it up, going on a crime spree or setting something on fire. (OK, the last thing happens.) Katy Perry’s premiered the music video for her single “Part of Me” and it’s part Marine Corps recruiting video and part total girl power.
After discovering that her man is cheating on her, Katy engages in an eye-rolling moment of storming into a gas station bathroom, chopping off her hair (the traditional post-breakup girl move) and crying about it. Just when you’re about to label the video as a total cliche, she does something astounding – she turns that despair into something productive: she joins the Marines. (I’m sure there’s some kind of point about physical toughness and mental toughness being made there.)
This leads to a montage of a whole lot of awesome on Katy’s part as she shoots rifles, blazes through obstacle courses, crawls through mud, does hand-to-hand combat, fireman carries a fellow Marine, storms a beach, engages in underwater combat, bayonets a dummy etc. It’s all here, just like an episode of Discovery’s “Surviving the Cut.” It’s a refreshing change from Katy’s usual candy-colored music videos.
