MLS: Henry leads Red Bulls
Thierry Henry scored his first two goals of the MLS season and assisted on one of Kenny Cooper’s pair to lead the Red Bulls to their first win of the season, 4-1 over the visiting Colorado Rapids. Omar Cummings scored the Rapids’ goal in the 77th, preventing rookie Ryan Meara from getting his first shutout.
AUTOS: Stewart rolls
Tony Stewart got his second NASCAR victory of the season when rain shortened the race at Auto Club Speedway by 71 laps yesterday in Fontana, Calif. The defending Sprint Cup champion has won seven of the last 15 races in a remarkable stretch of dominance, including Las Vegas last month. Kyle Busch finished second, with Dale Earnhardt Jr. taking third.
Helio Castroneves used a bold pass of Scott Dixon to win the IndyCar season opener in St. Petersburg, Fla.
Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso won the Formula One Malaysian Grand Prix after Sauber’s Sergio Perez ran off the track with six laps to go.
MLB: Utley won’t retire
Chase Utley will miss the entire exhibition schedule for the second straight year and will not be in the Phillies’ Opening-Day lineup due to his injured knees. The five-time All-Star second baseman said he will not have season-ending surgery and does not have plans to retire.
NCAA: UConn advances
Bria Hartley scored 20 points to help top-seeded Connecticut beat fourth-seeded Penn State 77-59 in the Kingston (R.I.) Regional semifinals. It’s the seventh straight season that UConn (32-4) has advanced to the regional finals. The Huskies will face No. 2 seed Kentucky tomorrow night with a berth in the Final Four on the line.
Butler, George Mason and VCU are headed to the Atlantic-10 Conference, a source with direct knowledge of the talks told The Post.
