MLB: Alomar, Francona on short list

Indians general manager Chris Antonetti said Cleveland interim manager Sandy Alomar Jr. and former Red Sox manager Terry Francona, now with ESPN, are on his search list and others candidates likely will be added.

The last-place Indians fired manager Manny Acta on Thursday after a little less than three seasons and replaced him with Alomar, the Tribe’s bench coach, for the season’s remaining games.

Infielder Tsuyoshi Nishioka has waived $3.25 million in future pay and was granted his release from the Twins after saying he was ashamed of his poor performance.

Nishioka will forgo the $3 million he was owed in 2013 on the final year of a three-year deal, and a $250,000 buyout. He is now a free agent.
