NFL: Colts coach is battling leukemia
Colts coach Chuck Pagano has been hospitalized for cancer treatment and probably will not return to full coaching duties this season, the team announced yesterday. He will be replaced on an interim basis by offensive coordinator Bruce Arians.
Key receivers Josh Cribbs, Mohamed Massaquoi and Travis Benjamin were among six Browns players missing practice yesterday. Safety T.J. Ward also was absent after having surgery on his right thumb. Tight end Alex Smith (concussion) also did not practice as the 0-4 Browns prepared for Sunday’s away game against the Giants.
Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel said Matt Cassel will remain the Chiefs’ starting quarterback. … Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said he is sticking with rookie quarterback Russell Wilson, who threw three interceptions in Sunday’s 19-13 loss in St. Louis.
MLB: Holland blames tweet on hacker
Texas starting pitcher Derek Holland said the homophobic slur that appeared on his Twitter account during Sunday night’s game with the Angels was the result of a hacker, according to a FoxSportsSouthwest.com report.
Holland, who by MLB rules is not allowed to tweet within 30 minutes of the first pitch and during games, was told of the tweets after the game. He was on the mound for nearly seven innings and didn’t know anyone was sending a tweet out from his account. The tweet has been deleted.
NBA: Bynum to miss three weeks
76ers center Andrew Bynum will sit out three weeks as a precaution after receiving knee treatment in Germany. Bynum had injections of plasma-rich platelets that supposedly stimulate healing in arthritis-affected areas in both of his knees.
The 76ers picked up the 2013-14 option on coach Doug Collins’ contract. …The Bulls gave coach Tom Thibodeau a four-year contract extension through the 2016-17 season.
ROAD RAGE: Stillwagon suspected in shooting
Former Ohio State football star Jim Stillwagon is suspected of shooting at a pickup truck on a highway ramp and later striking the driver with a handgun, causing it to fire a bullet that grazed the man’s head, following a road rage incident that spanned about 14 miles, Ohio police said.
The college Hall of Famer, a middle guard who helped the Buckeyes to a national championship in 1968, was jailed on a felonious assault charge and had bond set at $350,000 in Delaware (Ohio) municipal court.
SOCCER: Henry named MLS Player of the Week
Red Bulls star Thierry Henry was named MLS Player of the Week for the fifth time this season after a one-goal, three-assist performance in a 4-1 win last week over Toronto.
