A Brooklyn homeowner has passed up aluminum siding for the all-weather protection of biblical verse.
Fort Greene resident Jean Souffrant has painted 14 verses so far on the facade of his Lafayette Avenue walk-up (pictured), offering revelations for all who pass by.
“The way you eat for your body, I paint to feed your soul,” said Souffrant, 87.
The Haitian immigrant began his campaign about 20 years ago, at first carefully writing the verses freehand, and later using a stencil when his hands got too shaky.
“Blessed are those who do his commandments. They may have the right to the tree of life and may enter through the gates and into the city,” reads one.
Souffrant, a deacon at the nearby French-Speaking Baptist Church, says his labor of love doesn’t force Christianity on anyone: “If people choose to believe, so be it. I am a peacemaker, not a troublemaker.”
He continued, “So many people don’t go to church, so I put this there so that when someone goes by, you understand the word of god.”
Residents said they saw the writing on the wall — and appreciated it.
“It’s what we need in our day to day living in New York,” said Raven Drummond, 29. “You hear a lot of bad things every day, so it’s nice to see some good.”
Neighbors said it’s hard to keep up with the Johns and Lukes.
“It makes our wall look pretty uninspired,” said Mae Colburn.
