Youth soccer coach Mike Jones was killed in a brutal stabbing in the West Village early this morning that left his severed ear lying in a pool of blood on a 14th Street sidewalk.
The 25-year-old – who coached youth soccer in Westchester and worked with the Red Bulls Youth Training Programs – was found near 25 West 14th between Fifth and Sixth Aves. around 4:26 a.m. with six knife wounds to the head, neck and chest he’d suffered 10 minutes earlier, acording to police.
The Red Bulls had the following statement about Jones, a Hasbrouck Heights resident:
“We are aware of this tragedy and on behalf of the entire organization, want to send our most heartfelt condolences to Michael’s family, friends and loved ones. He was a tremendous individual, a fantastic coach who loved soccer and a terrific friend for many of us.
“This is truly a sad day for our soccer community and we will do our utmost to help authorities in their investigation of this case. Our thoughts and prayers are with Michael’s family at this time.”
Jones – who coached kids 7-to-14 before they entered the Red Bulls academy – was in the city with his girlfriend when he was attacked. He was rushed to Bellevue, but had lost so much blood from the deep slashes that he was pronounced DOA.
