Despite both franchises being around for over 100 years, the Orioles and Yankees have met just once in the postseason, in the 1996 ALCS. The Yankees won in five games to advance to the World Series for the first time since 1981. Here’s a look:
Game 1: YANKEES 5, Orioles 4 (11)
Jeffrey Maier reaches over the wall to help Derek Jeter get his first career postseason home run, tying the game 4-4 in the eighth. The Yankees win it on a homer by Bernie Williams.
Game 2: Orioles 5, YANKEES 3
Rafael Palmeiro hits a go-ahead two-run home run off reliever Jeff Nelson to give the Orioles a 4-2 lead in the seventh.
Game 3: Yankees 5, ORIOLES 2
The big blow is a two-run home run by Cecil Fielder in the eighth to provide the final margin. John Wetteland had a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his first save of the series.
Game 4: Yankees 8, ORIOLES 4
Darryl Strawberry’s two-run, eighth-inning homer, his second blast of the game, added some important insurance runs, bailing out shaky starter Kenny Rodgers.
Game 5: Yankees 6, ORIOLES 4
The Yankees batted around in the third inning, scoring all six of their runs, then held off an O’s rally. Bernie Williams — .474 (9-for-19) with two homers and six RBIs — is named series MVP.
