Jets coach Rex Ryan said he still believes in running back Shonn Greene on Thursday.
Greene has rushed for just 217 yards and 1 touchdown on 76 carries this season. The Jets are 25th in the NFL in rushing at 83 yards per game. This from a team that was expected to be a “Ground and Pound” unit.
“Have I lost confidence in Shonn Greene?” Ryan said. “The answer is no. I think we just keep giving him the ball. He’s working extremely hard. I just think it’s just a matter of time before he starts popping. We all know once he gets rolling that it’s just something, the confidence, your whole team is lifted when your big back is running.”
Ryan said Greene needs more room to run and that’s on the offensive line.
“We’ve got to block,” Ryan said. “There’s no magic scheme to try to run, like all of a sudden we’re going to run the bend play. We’ve just got to block and open things up an get some running room. That’s the main thing. I know there’s a lot of criticism directed at Shonn specifically. I don’t know if you have whoever as you’re running back … we have to create some running room. I think that’s the big thing.”
