COLLEGE: No. 2 Oregon trounces Sun Devils
Kenjon Barner ran for 143 yards and three touchdowns, Marcus Mariota added 135 yards, and No. 2 Oregon (7-0, 4-0 Pac-12) was a 43-21 winner at Arizona State (5-2, 3-1).
Garrett Gilbert threw four scoring passes, and SMU (3-4, 2-1 C-USA) returned three of its six interceptions for touchdowns and scored on a fumble return in a 72-42 victory over Houston (3-4, 2-1).
Former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky wants a judge to overturn his child sexual abuse convictions and give him a new trial, claiming his lawyers didn’t have enough time to prepare. Sandusky’s post-trial motions were filed yesterday at the courthouse in Bellefonte, Pa. where he was sentenced two weeks ago to 30 to 60 years in prison after being convicted of abusing 10 boys. He says there wasn’t evidence to support convictions.
The UConn women have returned to the top of the Big East Conference preseason rankings, one year after they were not picked as the favorite to win the conference for only the second time since 1994. The Huskies received 12 of the 15 first-place votes from the league’s coaches. Notre Dame, which has lost in the national championship game the past two years, received the other three first-place votes.
NBA: No surgery for T’Wolves’ Love
The Timberwolves said Kevin Love does not need surgery to repair two broken bones in his right hand.
Love met with specialists in New York yesterday, one day after breaking his hand while doing knuckle pushups in a morning workout. Doctors informed Love the injury can heal without surgery, but he is still expected to miss six to eight weeks.
Slater Martin, the Hall of Fame guard who won four NBA titles with the Minneapolis Lakers and one with the St. Louis Hawks, has died. He was 86 and died at a Houston nursing home after a sudden illness.
GOLF: Owen grabs first-round lead
In St. Simons Island, Ga., Greg Owen of England played bogey-free for a 6-under 64 and the early lead in the first round of the McGladrey Classic at Sea Island. Ryder Cup captain Davis Love III, playing on his home course, opened with a 65 and was joined by another Sea Island resident, Zach Johnson. Also at 65 were Danny Lee and David Toms.
In Australia, Spain’s Alejandro Canizares and New Zealand’s Michael Hendry each shot 7-under 65 to share the first-round lead in the Perth International. Argentina’s Emiliano Grillo was a stroke back, and Englishmen Paul Casey and Andrew Johnson..
MLB: Pujols had knee surgery last week
Albert Pujols had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee last week, and the Angels first baseman should be ready for spring training. The team described it as a minor cleanup.

Chelsea defender John Terry apologized for using in appropriate language during last October’s Anton Ferdinand incident and has accepted a four-match Premier League ban for racially abusing an opponent.
Venus Williams, playing her first tournament since the U.S. Open, defeated ninth-seeded Mona Barthel 7-6 (4), 6-4 at the Luxembourg Open. Williams has struggled with a back problem at the U.S. Open.
Irish Olympic boxing champion Katie Taylor will defend her title at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro after she said she turned down lucrative offers to turn pro.
